What a dreadful noise plebs make when they’re happy.

I recently re-watched the first season of the HBO show Rome and I was honestly a bit let down, it wasn’t quite as entertaining as I once thought. Don’t get me wrong, Rome is a great show and defiantly worth watching but after Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and House of Cards it just feels… like TV. The new crop of great shows really elevated things recently, leaving Rome on sort of the second tier.

The pieces are all Here. I found the entire cast to all really nail their parts (even during some rather goofy death scenes) and the whole set design and costuming are amazing. This feels like Rome (or at least the Rome I picture): dirty, alive and vibrant. There are a lot of grey characters, everyone has their flaws and I never really found anyone to truly despise. The way Rome bluntly show characters acting towards slaves is shocking but probably quite close to reality. Rome weaves in fictional characters and does it well enough that I actually believed them to be real before looking it up.

They creators just couldn’t bring it all together. The story as a whole is quite well done but there is too much fluff. It felt like every episode had to have some pointless sex scene. Don’t get me wrong they had some great bodies here but it almost felt like “well we are on HBO so we have to show some fucking!” It works in some respects but more often than not you just want it to be done with already. This is true of the religious scenes as well. It’s quite cool seeing all of the different Gods and prayers the characters would use but it just becomes too much. We don’t need to see a montage of someone doing a goofy seance every god damn episode.

Rome is defiantly a show worth viewing, the acting is spot on and the set design is amazing. It might not be one of the true greats but that doesn’t mean it’s not a great watch.
